The main value of Tai Chi comes from intentionally shifting weight. Arlene demonstrates the first move of the Yang style short form, developed by Cheng Man-ch’ing. In order to begin embracing change, Arlene starts with the simplest of movements.
The first move, ‘preparation,’ involves six distinct shifts in weight. On the sixth shift, weight is evenly distributed on each leg. Legs are parallel and hip-width apart.
“I love this move because it starts before the beginning. In Tai Chi there is always a preparation of relaxing the body and focusing the mind.”
