Qi – “life force energy”
Gong – “cultivation”
QiGong is an overall umbrella for internal energy cultivation, developed centuries ago in China for health and long life. The focus is on helping the individual learn how to access Qi and use it to more effectively manage daily challenges and functions.
There are many varieties of QiGong exercises, most which may be done while standing or sitting. Some include a meditation component. The main principles — related to those in Chinese Medicine — include breathing, relaxation, alignment, and minimal movement. Each movement is designed to cultivate and circulate Qi through the body. Some forms of QiGong focus on specific parts of the body or a specific organ system.
