Facing Barriers

August 12, 2022 By Arlene Faulk Leave a Comment

This lively, engaging discussion about themes in my book Walking on Pins and Needles continues to resonate with me. It’s so evident that our lives are filled with stories that often include common themes when we reveal our story to others.

Iowa book group gathering

Here we are on a July 2022 afternoon, gathered in West Des Moines, Iowa, in a lovely living room. Most women did not know each other and we had an age range from 30’s to 80’s. What a great group! As I talked about my story, from my recently published memoir, I saw heads nodding up and down. We were connecting on a number of issues.

Facing barriers seemed to be a subject that resonated with everybody — “my doctor doesn’t believe me”; “I know I’m not making up the pain I’m feeling”; “what to do when no medication seems to work or the mounting side effects are worse than the condition they’re supposed to treat” “I can’t say anything at work because my skills and competency will be questioned.;” Being open about the barriers I faced helped others do the same and not feel alone. That is a big deal, not feeling alone.

Another of my themes was to keep going. Fear can keep us from trying something new, out of our comfort zone. And yet, we need to face our fears, do our homework and take a step forward, even when uncomfortable. What I learned through my experience is that we often fear what we don’t know. It holds us back. Think about this — the unknown, where we might go with trepidation is where the possibilities are. I had no idea what I was getting myself into with a practitioner of Chinese medicine, with Tai Chi. I jumped into the arena anyway. It changed my life. I could never have imagined that I could be healthy as I am today, because I didn’t know the possibilities. I jumped and the possibilities found me. There’s not a void in that unknown we no nothing about; there may be lots of options, possibilities, steps that might be taken to improve our lives.

book group setup

Storytelling is important, not just for others to hear our story but to share common themes and experiences that we go through as human beings. Talking to each other face to face brings a special energy of connection and being in the moment. Hopefully, you will take some time to share your own story, with family, with friends, with a group gathered to share common experiences that help them know they are not alone and to inspire all of us to seek new possibilities that may be unknown to us right now.

What Words to Use?

June 13, 2022 By Arlene Faulk Leave a Comment

I love “words” and thinking about words. Maybe that’s because I’m a writer, who ponders about the right word to use in a sentence, in a title, using a word that will convey the right tone and message. I often quote a teacher I had at a workshop in a University of Iowa summer writers’ festival who said. “When it comes to writing we only have two things: words and the sequence of words.” Think about that. It’s simple and profound.

Ever since teenage years, I’ve kept a book where I write down words, phrases I’ve heard in a speech and in passages from books where I am moved by the author’s talent in using the right words, to create a visual image or an emotional response. Almost 50 years ago I wrote down a quote from Mark Twain: “The difference between the right word and the almost right word, is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug.”

writing

At this particular time in history, I think we’re facing a huge dilemma in knowing what words to use for where we are in our public health situation. We (that includes a wide range of people and organizations) are struggling with what words to use — post pandemic, new normal, going back to where we were, hybrid gatherings??? We don’t seem to have words and phrases that describe a state of limbo and a future that is not where we’ve been and unknown for where it’s going.

This creates a state of unease, anxiety and lack of control. What do we do? First, we need to realize we’re in a time of not knowing, of change, of moving into a space that is yet to be filled. Maybe you’re a person who can help lift up words that will comfort the unknowing. And even though we might feel a lack of control because we don’t know what’s coming, don’t know what words to use, we need to realize that change is the constant and even if we have the words, we don’t have the control. Learning how to accept change and live into it can serve us well.

Relax. Nothing is under control.

Good advice. Helps us relax and be in the moment. But still, I want to continue to ponder what words we can use to help us frame the time we’re in and where we are going. What words come to your mind for this time we’re moving in?

Love Local Bookstores

March 24, 2022 By Arlene Faulk 2 Comments

What a wonderful and busy first month of my book launch – Walking on Pins and Needles: A Memoir of Chronic Resilience in the Face of Multiple Sclerosis! A great live event with Nadine Kenney Johnstone at Heartwood Center in Evanston, a warm evening gathering at Picnic Wine and Provisions in Rogers Park, radio and podcast interviews and broadcasts, many phone calls and emails from friends and readers I don’t know. Great feedback and I’m so touched that a consistent theme is “I loved it. It’s a page turner.”

The moment that stopped me, made me pause, smile and be joyful was a photo, a still photo that for me shows warm, great energy, childhood memories. My book is on the shelf at The Book Stall in Winnetka, Il.

It’s so exciting to see my book among so many other stories, alphabetically on a shelf. This is a dream come true! I look forward to someone contacting me after they have walked into The Book Stall, browsed, savored the possibilities of great stories in the aisles, and then purchased my book.

My book Walking on Pins and Needles: A Memoir of Chronic Resilience in the Face of Multiple Sclerosis is out in the world! I’m getting ready for my first big live book event, at Heartwood Center in Evanston, Il, where I began teaching in 1999 and continue to this day. It’s so meaningful to talk about my book with my writing coach, Nadine Kenney Johnstone in the Heartwood Skylight Room, where I teach Tai Chi every week.

My students are so excited and supportive of my book launch. On publishing day, 2/22/22 I taught Tai Chi and we all gathered to celebrate. The energy of the occasion and moving our energy together in class was palpable.

Exciting times as my book launch is just 3 weeks away! I’m so glad to share how Tai Chi has been instrumental in my healing and maintaining a healthy body and mind. Tai Chi is about letting go, being in the present moment. It’s a wonderful practice that allows the stresses and to-do lists fade to the background. I look forward to sharing my story with you soon!

FROM TAI CHI STUDENTS

Tai Chi makes me feel calm, yet energized. Because of my practice, the small irritants of life affect me less.

Tai Chi student

I had back surgery, was in pain and had little range of motion. Tai Chi practice at Heartwood has helped me increase flexibility, my range of motion and my overall stamina.

Tai Chi student

Arlene teaches the Tai Chi form in such a gentle and connected way that many movements now feel utterly natural and healing.

Tai Chi student

I've even shared some of the exercises with my bike club to help reduce injuries. They really work!

Tai Chi student

I've always been a klutz and have regularly lost my balance and fallen when walking outside. Arlene taught me how to stand and walk properly through Tai Chi. I really can't believe it: I haven't fallen in four years since I've been taking Tai Chi with Arlene!

Tai Chi student

I love Arlene's Tai Chi classes. She helps us understand not only what we're doing, but also why we're doing it. That really helps me take what I learn in class and apply it to my daily life.

Tai Chi student

I'm really inspired by what Tai Chi has done for Arlene. She is a great teacher, who is calm and very patient. She has really helped me not to be so hard on myself.

Tai Chi student

I play golf and had a lesson after school, on the same day we had Tai Chi class. My coach commented, 'Your posture is amazing and all of the balance issues that we have been fighting for so long seem to have just taken a vacation.' I mentioned to him that I thought it was due to Tai Chi.

Tai Chi student

Tai Chi relaxes your entire body and promotes peace and proper breathing. The more I manage to breathe properly while doing any activity in my life, I generally tend to do a lot better at it. I benefited from Tai Chi because it managed to help me with my breathing skills even more.

Tai Chi student

Tai Chi really gives my body strength to put up with the pains of my breast cancer and back problems. Tai Chi is 'sneaky'. You don't think it's helping, but eventually you realize it's helping you.

Tai Chi student

For me, Tai Chi brings comfort and quiet amidst all the chaos and change.

Becky, Tai Chi student

In just a few months, the practice has become perhaps the most nurturing element in my life during COVID times, when sustaining a commitment to anything else has been challenging.

Barb, Tai Chi student

The community Tai Chi has provided has been a gift. With so much we can now do whenever we wish --- with an app, YouTube video, or streaming service --- meeting weekly (via zoom) in real time, live, to practice Tai Chi creates true community.

David, Tai Chi student

I really enjoy our time together and I've found Tai Chi a great way to "keep moving," not only during this pandemic but also as a regular practice with a wonderful integration of mind, body and spirit.

Martha, Tai Chi student

Tuning into the class and seeing familiar faces of the other students brings a nice sense of community and connection during this time of separation and isolation.

Julia, Tai Chi student

I love the walking practice because it helps me slow down and focus only on the moment.

Tai Chi student

Tai Chi has made me aware of how I’m standing and where my weight is. My balance is improving.

Tai Chi student

I hear Arlene saying to listen to my body and only do what I can do. That helps me relax.
