Shimmering Leaves

May 13, 2023 By Arlene Faulk

Where I live in live in the midwest part of the United States, the trees and bushes continue to show us spring and new life, with small buds, leaves and blossoms. The tulips are up, standing erect with their tall with their slender green stems and some of the pansies are still smiling back at us.

In Tai Chi class we bring intention and attention to the present moment, to how we are standing and moving, to our alignment and our breathing. The Tai Chi Classics say that our internal energy, Qi, roots in the feet, transfers through the legs, is commanded by the waist, moves up the back, then through arms and flowers in the hands and fingers.

That’s like the trees. Think about all the work they do to bring up nutrients and energy from the earth, through their trunk and branches and flower at the tips, with leaves and blossoms. I start every class asking students to stand with legs and feet parallel, hip-width apart. We shift our weight slightly forward, then to the center, to the outside, inside of the feet, returning to center. We move in a small circular motion, visualizing our feet connected to the earth, feeling the energy and bringing it up through the entire body, flowering in the hands and fingers.

I love that image because we become like the trees, particularly at this time of year, when the leaves are new. The new leaves are a light green and have a shimmering quality. New life and a new season, nourishment and renewed energy.

Walking outside after class in downtown Chicago this week, right in front of me were city trees, with new leaves shimmering in the sunlight. Take a minute to really look at these trees. What a message they are giving us with new life, a new chapter and season. Let us pay attention and start a new season for ourselves, thinking about possibilities, a new way to move forward and nourish ourselves

Time to Exhale

August 12, 2021 By Arlene Faulk

Summer is a time to be outside, to take a rode trip, go to a beach with family or friends. This year we’re encouraged to be outside, because we are still dealing with a variant of the COVID19 virus. Are you being creative in your plans, even if you’ve had to adjust from what you hoped for?

It’s still a Yang time of year, with the heat, vacations, getting ready to go back to school. In the midst of it all we need to remember to breathe with intention. Take a deep breath in, right now. Hold for two seconds. Now exhale. As you exhale, let go of any fears or anxieties you have right now. Let the exhale help you let go. Do it again. Breathe in. Hold. Now exhale a long slow breath.

A Lighter Moment

June 7, 2020 By Arlene Faulk

In the midst of intensity, it helps to enjoy a moment that makes us smile.

A frisky squirrel regularly stops by to visit my cousin in Switzerland. Who knew this little creature could stand in a Tai Chi bow stance on the porch of a Swiss chalet?! And look at the good alignment! Enjoy this lighter moment.

Year of the Rat – 2020

February 7, 2020 By Arlene Faulk

Year of the Rate

Chinese Lunar New Year, Year of the Rat (4718) began on January 25, 2020. The new year is based on the lunar calendar, so the actual start date varies from year to year but is always in January or February. The traditions are many and rich. The color is red. Lanterns line the streets and homes. Parades mark the celebration with marching bands, colorful and floats and lion and dragon dances.

My Tai Chi students and I have hosted celebrations for many years. This year, on January 26, we gathered with friends and guests at Heartwood Integrative Health and Healing. I am a Rat, so this is my year, the first in a cycle of 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.

Xin Tian

What a great afternoon! Xin Tian, an acupuncturist from Heartwood gave a very informative presentation about Traditional Chinese Medicine. Participants tuned in and asked many questions. Xin also shared childhood memories of Chinese New Year that she and her family experienced in Beijing, where she was born and grew up.

We all experienced moving our bodies through GiGong, led by Marsha Warren. I loved standing in a hip-width stance, with soft knees, paying attention to proper alignment, following Marsha firm, but soothing instructions. “Do you feel something?” she asked after shaking our arms, hands and fingers in a specific way. Yes, I felt a little tingling. I felt my energy moving and it felt good.

Although the focus was celebration, yes, we had some great snacks — oranges, Chinese candies, almond cookies and sesame bite cookies from Chinatown, we did reinforce good lessons. Learning new things adds to our knowledge base and tool kit for promoting healthy minds and bodies. Directed movement of our bodies, for relaxation for moving our energy, promoting our health is important to experience on a regular basis.

Thank you to my Tai Chi students, to Xin and Marsha for a stimulating afternoon. Hopefully, the Year of the Rat will be a great year. I will be paying attention.

Teaching Tai Chi: the early years

June 12, 2019 By Arlene Faulk

Heartwood Integrative Health and Healing in Evanston, Il. is celebrating 20 years of providing excellent health care to the community. This is a milestone to honor and celebrate. We have a great celebration planned for June 22, noon to four in Heartwood’s parking lot, 1818 Dempster. Do stop by, say hi, eat a taco if you are in the Evanston area.

Heartwood Center

For me this year is a double celebration — along with Heartwood, this is my 20th year teaching Tai Chi. I am an original at Heartwood, there since the beginning in 1999. As I reflect over the 20 years, I can’t help but think what I have learned, what I feel my contribution to integrative health and healing has been and continues to be.

tai chi class

One of the biggest things I have learned is that potential students are eager to learn. Even without knowing much about Tai Chi or how a class might enhance health, women and men come to class open to a new way of thinking, a new way of moving their bodies. They show up, take the first step. Recently, I thanked my students for showing up, sometimes getting in the car, driving in traffic, feeling tired and still, they show up. Often,  students will say how glad they are that that they came, even when tired, because they feel so much better, have so much more energy by the end of class.

So many people know there are resources, classes, exercise routines that can help in improving health and feeling better. What is it in a person who says, “yes”? Some know that and don’t do anything about it. Others get out the door and start. . . and continue. . . and make Tai Chi or another energy practice part of their lifestyle.

I want to applaud each of you who took that first step and continue to show up. I thank you. Your body thanks you. Keep showing up!

FROM TAI CHI STUDENTS

Tai Chi makes me feel calm, yet energized. Because of my practice, the small irritants of life affect me less.

Tai Chi student

I had back surgery, was in pain and had little range of motion. Tai Chi practice at Heartwood has helped me increase flexibility, my range of motion and my overall stamina.

Tai Chi student

Arlene teaches the Tai Chi form in such a gentle and connected way that many movements now feel utterly natural and healing.

Tai Chi student

I've even shared some of the exercises with my bike club to help reduce injuries. They really work!

Tai Chi student

I've always been a klutz and have regularly lost my balance and fallen when walking outside. Arlene taught me how to stand and walk properly through Tai Chi. I really can't believe it: I haven't fallen in four years since I've been taking Tai Chi with Arlene!

Tai Chi student

I love Arlene's Tai Chi classes. She helps us understand not only what we're doing, but also why we're doing it. That really helps me take what I learn in class and apply it to my daily life.

Tai Chi student

I'm really inspired by what Tai Chi has done for Arlene. She is a great teacher, who is calm and very patient. She has really helped me not to be so hard on myself.

Tai Chi student

I play golf and had a lesson after school, on the same day we had Tai Chi class. My coach commented, 'Your posture is amazing and all of the balance issues that we have been fighting for so long seem to have just taken a vacation.' I mentioned to him that I thought it was due to Tai Chi.

Tai Chi student

Tai Chi relaxes your entire body and promotes peace and proper breathing. The more I manage to breathe properly while doing any activity in my life, I generally tend to do a lot better at it. I benefited from Tai Chi because it managed to help me with my breathing skills even more.

Tai Chi student

Tai Chi really gives my body strength to put up with the pains of my breast cancer and back problems. Tai Chi is 'sneaky'. You don't think it's helping, but eventually you realize it's helping you.

Tai Chi student

For me, Tai Chi brings comfort and quiet amidst all the chaos and change.

Becky, Tai Chi student

In just a few months, the practice has become perhaps the most nurturing element in my life during COVID times, when sustaining a commitment to anything else has been challenging.

Barb, Tai Chi student

The community Tai Chi has provided has been a gift. With so much we can now do whenever we wish --- with an app, YouTube video, or streaming service --- meeting weekly (via zoom) in real time, live, to practice Tai Chi creates true community.

David, Tai Chi student

I really enjoy our time together and I've found Tai Chi a great way to "keep moving," not only during this pandemic but also as a regular practice with a wonderful integration of mind, body and spirit.

Martha, Tai Chi student

Tuning into the class and seeing familiar faces of the other students brings a nice sense of community and connection during this time of separation and isolation.

Julia, Tai Chi student

I love the walking practice because it helps me slow down and focus only on the moment.

Tai Chi student

Tai Chi has made me aware of how I’m standing and where my weight is. My balance is improving.

Tai Chi student

I hear Arlene saying to listen to my body and only do what I can do. That helps me relax.
